Persons with High Functioning Autism often have executive functioning challenges which includes organization, scheduling, understanding the importance of homework completion, prioritizing, and overall task completion. Totally Social ASD recognizes that individuals on the spectrum also tend to have challenges in the area of reading comprehension and written expression. As the child moves into high school more emphasis is placed on inferring and taking on a character's perspective which are two of the major challenges that individuals on the autism spectrum face. Incorporating the child's topics of fascination or intense interests with academic areas has proven to be successful in increasing time on task, work completion and synthesizing information. While your child is working on their academic skills we will also focus on your child's specific social communication challenges through "teachable moments" within the structure of the session.
