The sky is blue, the sun is out, the birds are chirping, law mowers are heard frequently. We made it to summer. Ahhhh. We are always excited for this time of year because we get to collaborate for our summer seminars and run them together. Sabra and I have created three, two week seminars this year for our teens and young adults to consider. The first session we will dissect emotions and dig deeper to help our clients really understand how they might be feeling. We notice sometimes only a few emotion words tend to get used. "I'm anxious..." Well let's look more closely at that. What else is going on? Is there fear over an upcoming event? Is there overwhelm due to a number of tasks being put on the to do list? Is there worry over thoughts that are stuck and can't seem to go away? We will be breaking down emotion words to help create better awareness and understanding. That should ease communication and enhance self-advocacy skills. The following week we will talk about the steps for asking help, recognizing when confused, and practice a variety of scenarios and contexts where help may be needed or requested. Following that, we will learn about interviewing skills to include resume support and some great tips of what to do and what not to do! With the next week leading into mock interview practice where each client will be put through an interview and will be given direct feedback about their behavior and answers. In the last duo we will cover interactions with the police: things to expect if approached, pulled over, if a call is made to a residence, how to interact with police, and other questions our clients and families may have. Our last session will be focused on the law. Particularly, what is expected and unexpected behaviors that we might not tend to think about day to day, but could have implications. This will cover the hidden curriculum of behavior and interactions with others. For now, these sessions will be held virtually, but we are monitoring places we used to meet to see when we might return to group settings. We are also working on details to resume some in-person meetups! The South Lyon Java House will allow us to hold a game meetup/hangout 1-2x a month. Details on that to come! We are seeing some forward movement back to gathering and are so happy! This has been a crazy challenge for everyone to overcome. Whether you join us or not, please take a moment to give yourself some positive feedback of what went well during this time. What did you learn about yourself? What are you proud of? We all need to focus on some positivity and praise. We are so thankful for meeting our out of state clients and we are so appreciative of our current clients sticking with us virtually so we could at least work together in some capacity. Cheers to all who did hard things!
